An Introduction to the Key Instruction in Surgical Skills Course for Foundation Year 1 & 2


This is an essential one-day course for Foundation Year Doctors focuses on key surgical skills including knot tying and suturing. It also includes a demonstration and practice experience of surgical scrub technique and the donning of a surgical gown and gloves. Students also gain access to theoretical sessions on-line – available prior to and after the course.

 

  • Principles of surgical scrub technique
  • Principles of gloving techniques & gowning
  • Principles of knot tying & suturing
  • Principles of wound healing
  • Principles of surgical dressings incl TNP
  • Principles of surgical skin stapling
  • Principles of pre-operative hair removal
  • Principles of Electrosurgery & devices
  • The Hazards associated with Surgical smoke

 

Some of the topics to be covered will include:

  • Discussion re: Theatre Etiquette
  • Demonstration and of surgical scrub technique, surgical gowning & gloving (including practice donning of surgical gown & gloves)
  • Handling Instruments
  • Knot tying
    Surgical, Surgeons , Instrument knots
  • Wound Closure techniques
    Simple interrupted, Vertical mattress suturing, Drain fixation
    Insertion of surgical skin stapling & the application of surgical glue
  • Minor surgical lesions
