Course Purpose:

This course is aimed at newly qualified or recently appointed staff new to the operating theatre/perioperative environment. Its purpose is to support these staff in gaining the appropriate skills to enable them to function effectively in the perioperative environment. This course would not be appropriate for registered Operating Department Practitioners.

Cost:

The total cost of the on-line theatre course is £920.00 per student.

 

Academic Credit:

Successful completion of the online theatre course will be awarded 60 level 6 credits

 

Course Accreditation:

The Professional Education in Practice Course has been Credit Rated by the University of Greenwich

 

Assessment Process:

This online theatre course is classed as a part-time study programme. It will consist of 90 on-line taught study hours (15 study days equivalent), and be undertaken across the equivalent of an academic year. There are four start dates per annum.

 

Students will undertake this course whilst employed within an operating department. Clinical practice will be facilitated by an appointed and appropriately trained mentor within the students’ workplace, and will be undertaken as part of their employed work activities. Students will be expected to be assessed using the competency document provided.

 

Students will receive a suggested plan of topics and activities to help them organise their study time. The plan will be devised to provide direction and support related to the identified topics within the practice competencies, ensuring they receive theoretical support linked to the practice experience.

 

Learning will be directed through teaching materials related to the indicative content provided via a dedicated website. Self tests will be included to enable students to measure their progress. A learning contract should be negotiated with their mentor within the first month of commencing the course.

 

Course Aims:

  • Provide theoretical support to the competency-based training undertaken in the practitioners own workplace.
  • Provide a structured approach to the development of knowledge and skills that will enable practitioners to care effectively and safely for patients throughout the patients’ journey within the operating theatre.
  • Enable critical examination of the delivery of evidence-based care for the patient undergoing care within the operating theatre environment.
  • Promote the development of a critical understanding of the professional, ethical and legal implications of working in the operating theatre environment.

 

Course Outcomes

  • Explore and reflect on accountability, and legal and ethical issues which may arise within the operating department.

  • Effectively and safely deliver care to the conscious, sedated and unconscious patient within the operating theatre environment, and demonstrate an understanding of the relevant pharmacology for these patients.

  • Critically analyse the provision of a sterile, disinfected or clean environment as appropriate, and understand the essential requirements for infection control within the operating department.

  • Demonstrate a critical understanding of the physical, psycho-social and emotional needs of patients the anaesthetic, operating and recovery areas.

  • Critically evaluate and promote evidence-based care within the Perioperative environment.

  • Critically examine the hazards for health and safety of patients and staff in the operating department and analyse how these are managed.

  • Utilise reflective skills to appraise the role of the nurse within the operating department.

 

Portfolio for Assessment

In order to gain academic recognition the student will submit a portfolio of evidence to demonstrate they have achieved the course outcomes.
