Course Overview:
The Online Theatre Preparation Course for Advanced Practitioners’ is an 8 week competency based, professionally led programme which has been created to enable the Advanced Practitioner to develop the underpinning knowledge and a range of skills within the operating theatre.
The course is aimed at those who are preparing to undertake further study to assist the surgeon during a surgical procedure. This structured programme is intended to provide a set of challenges and demands as you develop this new area of clinical practice. We hope the course provides a good foundation for to do this.
Candidates are able to commence the 8 week programme at a date of their choice and are offered the opportunity to submit a completed portfolio of evidence developed during the course. Successful candidates will be provided with written feedback and a certificate of competence.
The aim of the course is to:
- Provide theoretical support to the competency-based training undertaken in the practitioners own workplace.
- Provide a structured approach to the development of knowledge and skills that will enable practitioners to care effectively and safely for patients throughout the patients’ journey within the operating theatre.
- Enable critical examination of the delivery of evidence-based care for the patient undergoing care within the operating theatre environment.
- Promote the development of a critical understanding of the professional, ethical and legal implications of working in the operating theatre environment.
The course will include:
- Course documents, portfolio development & competences
- Surgical documentation, record keeping & pre-operative preparation of the surgical patient
- Theatre etiquette
- Basic principles of patient safety within the operating room including surgical time out” and “correct site marking
- Surgical scrub technique, gowning & gloving
- Professional & legal aspects related to the operating room practice
- Basic Surgical instrumentation, sutures & surgical needles
- Understanding surgical preparation of the patient, hair removal, skin preparation & draping
- Positioning of the surgical patient
- Peri-operative inadvertent hypothermia
- Prevention of deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism
- Pathology and specimen management
- Tissue viability, surgical wound classification & wound dressings in theatre
- Decontamination, disinfection, reprocessing, sterile storage & distribution
Cost:
The course fee is £350.00. The course fee will include access to the on-line documentation and supporting course material, tutorial support, certificate of completion if portfolio submitted and successful.
